Ipoh

My family’s 10 hours train trip to Ipoh.

We heard about this quiet and peaceful city where not many people travel here compared to Malaka, Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Especially that it is the closest city to Cameron Highland. Cameron Highland for the tea farm, cool weather, and beautiful scenery, while Ipoh Old Town is for its peaceful pace of the old city and of course all the good food waiting for us there.

The train trip was long, indeed, but it was bearable. Our main concern was our youngest one, our super duper active 3 years old, but somehow we managed to entertain her along the way. For my two older one, we banned them from using ipads and DS games, instead we provide them books, snacks and board games.

There was a TV with selected movies inside the train. It played Madagascar, etc, I could not recall. The TV helped us to fill up the time.

Some seating rooms were extremely colder compared with others, I do recommend bringing jackets or blankets.

Ipoh boasted for its Ayam Tauge, that is one of its speciality that you should not miss. The Old Town does have plenty good restaurants at affordable price. Staying at hotels surrounding Old Town is definetely recommended.

Travelling around Ipoh with public taxi was fine, although most taxis did not use their meter. They normally just told you the price from one place to another, and you just agree with them. Taxis were old, but all drivers we met were courteous and kind to tell us what to expect in the city. Everything went smoothly during this travel, and we are very thankful for that.

Here is KTM (Malaysia Train) website for buying tickets (you need to go to Johor Bahru train station first before starting train journey surrounding Malaysia. Singapore-Johor Bahru train tickets can be purchased at the same website)

Our stay was at Sarang Paloh Heritage Stay, quite recommended. It was gorgeous, clean, and well located at Ipoh Old Town.
