書道 A Japanese Caligraphy Experience

29 Sep

I had a precious experience of learning Japanese caligraphy today. My friend is a Japanese volunteer at Singapore museums. She is a member of FOM (Friends of Museums) Singapore.

Together with other Japanese volunteers, they are holding a Japanese fair for learning Japanese caligraphy at Peranakan Museum on October 25, 2011 for members of Friends of Museums. My friend invited me to be their “trial” student. 🙂

The experience was very interesting for me because caligraphy is mostly found in Chinese and Japanese culture, and maybe Korean too? In Indonesia, we do not really practice learning caligraphy in school. Maybe we do now since our schools start putting Chinese in the curricullum. In Japan, apparently children learn caligraphy since they are at Primary Three. They learn it for quite some time. Caligraphy is considered a prestigious Japanese art.

I managed to write ‘Hana’ (Flower), Kokoro (Heart), Ai (Love) and Wa (和). Not perfect, but not too bad for a beginner 🙂
